Responsive Theme
« on: October 26, 2015, 04:08:34 pm »
Ma oeyä smuk,

In the fact that many people are using tablets and smartphones for surfing on the internet, and our current forum themes are not designed to be responsive*. As there were some desires by some of our members in the past, we want to offer a possibility to use also a responsive theme for this forum.

We have an interest to get a mobile theme developed by smf-media.com. However, before we are going to get that theme for LN, we would ask our members, especially those who uses tablets/smartphones, whether this theme is worth adding it or not. According the devs, that theme should autodetect mobile devices and use the mobile theme rather than the standard non-responsive themes.

There is, unfortunately, no real demo site, but their community uses that theme. Thus, you can visit http://smf-media.com/community/ and check it out. We would love to hear your opinions/thoughts about that theme, and if the majority find it cool and worth adding it, we'll get that theme and set it up on this forum as 6th theme for mobile device users.

I tested it a bit on the computer and the tablet.

It's probably easier to tap this way. However, there are things I don't like.
  • You can't neither edit your profile nor add stuff in the gallery. However, maybe there's something I didn't notice.
  • You will have to open the navigation menu a lot
  • You will get to learn the BBC code, because it looks like you don't have the buttons for it in the mobile mode.
I would surely like to find out how the shoutbox would behave in this mode.

We will likely have to compromise on not having all the toys the normal themes have. I use the txon theme on my tablet and it works fine.  On a small phone screen, just the essentials would be needed.  - M.

Just because I accidentally clicked at the link and saw stuff...

Just to menrtion it: That forum, I've linked in the OP, is not intended to be used as posting/editing/creating thread/albums (in their gallery that apparently does not support that mobile theme). That's the forum of the developors. Therefore, one probably can not use some stuff due to not granted permissions as "Newbie" in their forum...

Fì'u. That's why I wouldn't want/need an extra theme for mobile devices.

I unfortunately don't own a tablet (keftxo), so I can't say much about it, but how it looks for smartphone users? I have a Galaxy S4 Mini, and I am always afraid using the forums on my phone, because I used to type(touch?) at wrong buttons/links often, because of the very small icons/texts. I so much would love to have the Txon and Trr theme get responsive. Unfortunately, it requires extremely much works and I did try to make the already available themes responsive, but the result wasn't sufficient for a productive use.
That's why we suggest to get a theme for mobile device users to give them a possibility to use our forums easier. And this finally leads me to the abovementioned mobile theme that includes a kind of autodetection just to trigger that theme for mobile devices only, not for the desktop users, of course. The thing is that this theme mod is a paid mod and we cannot test and play with it, without purchasing it first. So, we decided to ask the community about it, even if the testing possibility is very limited.

That's OK. :) I'm a bit demanding. ;D :-[

Except for the things I pointed out above, it's fine. One would probably be able to do without the ability to edit one's profile and one's albums.

The limitations you have experienced are because of the forum owner that set up limited permissions for the Newbie group. We have no influences about that. That forum is for presale questions and feedback by costumers, not for testing.

I highly guess that it is not supposed to do these stuff in their forum/gallery.

That's because the limitation given by the mobile devices. One cannot add all the buttons, links, info one can see on a desktop computer. There aren't enough space. This is why they are usually "hidden" in some kind of drop-down menus.

I haven't registered me there and I won't, so I can't say anything about the editor.

This is one of the unknown variables. Same also for some other modifications we have installed.

I know that. Maybe some (not a lot) basic buttons could've been added instead of being put in the drop-down menu, but that's my opinion.

Yeah. If at least I could know what I'm buying, it would be great. However, let's deal with it. I'm not the king of the world.

I don't know if I can take screenshots.

Anyway, I mainly use the desktop computer, so if the others like it and want it, then I'll be happy about that.
This is just my opinion.

I access this forum on a variety of different computers and a smartphone. Although typing is a bit tedious on a smartphone, it works well enough for the purpose, and I doubt a responsive theme would fix that.

I'll take a look at that mobile theme when I have some spare time (laugh!) and see if it is really useful.
