As mentioned, SMF 2.1.x has that feature but, moving to the next forum software version, that is currently in development btw, will bring some more changes than the last upgrade. It will require deep discussions because there is at least one quite frequent-used feature that will be not available anymore...

In that case, we could keep the karma system, but differently.

The devs, replaced the karma system by a "like" system (similar to Facebook minus the reactions things). I would have to get/write a modification that add the Karma system back, if we have to keep it.
We would need a productive discussion about pro and contra karma system and the answer for the question which part has more weight/value.

"differently"?

PS: if this will become a more discussed topic, I'll split to its own topic. :P

Sooner or later it will have to be, right? If you want to have a productive discussion and the community has to decide what they want.

I always thought it's a nice litte way to show appreciation – something that a like/dislike feature probably will convey as well. I think the original concept was to show long-term, experienced members from newcomers. But like every value system it can be abused. It will be sad for me to see it go but I'm not tied to it that much that I want to stand in the way of progress.

I agree that it would be very deeply discussed.

So there are also other functions which we use frequently and which will be not available?

What are all new features that will be gained from another upgrade?
What are all features that will be lost?
Will any other plugins break?

I think if we do decide to upgrade, should at least wait til next version status is stable rather than dev.

For now, I like what we have. I remember we stayed on the previous version for so many years. I'd cast my vote as: No hurries on an upgrade unless a security fail of some kind has been fixed by the upgrade. Or, if only one or less of our extension packages will break without means of repair and it is not something crucial.

I have not the interest or plan to upgrade SMF this year (and perhaps also not next year or upcomming years, except we decide so). I want to express my worries and thoughts for the time if we will do that step, just to prevent any misunderstanding.
We have 4 modifications which are already integrated in the next version. The installed modifications have their limits like the draft feature, which currently works only for post and thread, not for PMs as some people would like to have. There are a few other things that works yet but caused a few problems in the past like the bad behavior mod and we have that mod only because of the reverse proxy (for CloudFlare thing). And what's really stupid is, SMF 2.0.x can't work with IPv6, the software just ignore it.

I don't know how to describe it, but there's probably a way to transfer the points to a SMF-independent system or to somewhere on the user space without necesarily being changeable.

Does it flush the karma points? Or is it rather a like button for every post?

Karma points would go byebye. It's a like button per post.

EDIT: That karma thing is why my feels says to me to remain as long as possible on SMF 2.0.x

I agree. If the update would bring more stability and security and overall a better experience, you shouldn't hesitate, we can live without the Karma-system if need be. But If it's not necessary yet, "don't change a running system" ;D

isn't it "never touch a running system" :P :D

I completely agree :) Depends on all advantages which upgrate would bring. However "don't change a running system, if it's not necessary" are my words too ;D

Tìtstewan

Yeah, "never touch a running system" is a thing.
I would like to make clear that the final decision about what will remain and what will go, will be made by Markì, of course.

Perhaps, we should let this thread alone untill these upgrade days will be close. :)

Also if it doesn't need to be change, don't change working things. ;)

So it would be good to know his current opinion. Generally, if there's no really good reason to upgrade (security issue etc.), there's no need to do so, IMHO. Possible new features are usually not so important - we still can work the same way as we did so far.

About the only thing I see here that could be a problem in the next few years might be the IPv6 thing, which kind of surprises me. But despite the need overall for a better IP address system, IPv6 does not seem to be catching on like it was predicted to, at least not here in the West. Although it would not be a deal-breaker to me to see the karma system go, I don't see why it has to be eliminated (%#$%$^ Facebook!). Perhaps ther will be enough pushback that it will be retained in future versions, or else available as a plug-in. As far as indicating experience, I think the number of posts indicates that nearly as well, especially because I have yet to see negative karma on anyone, except perhaps user Skxawng ;)

All that said, I agree with the general consensus here to not upgrade the site to a feature-breaking version unless driven by important technical or security concerns.
The same applies to Dothraki, although the smaller user base/installed features there makes administration there a lot simpler.
