I was made aware that there's a problem with the PM service to a member. When I try to write him I get this message:

QuoteUnable to find member 'XX'.

The following error or errors occurred while posting this message:
One or more 'to'-recipients could not be found.

But his profile exists, he hasn't deleted his account. Any ideas what's going on?  :-\

The latest security patch for SMF seems to have broken the sql query for PM "display name" checks. The workaround is to click on the "Find Members" link next to the "To:" field and do a wildcard search for the member (for example, to find "tsu'tey", do a search for tsu*tey and then select the member from the results). This will place the member's login ID into the To: field which should work.

EDIT: I have a question into the SMF crowd on this. Will see if a permanent fix is available.

For Tsyalatun since the PM system is blocking sending PM's to you (from me)?

Tried this method prior to posting here but still came up with the same name and blocked the PM...  It just doesn't like me...  :(

May this method won't work always.

I just tried to send user Tsyalatun te Eyktan Txuratu'itan a PM message. For the first try, I let the PM system find the name by autocompletion. It found their rather long username, and everything seemed OK. However, upon trying to send the message, the PM system reported the user didn't exist.

I then used the 'search for members', and Tsyalatun te Eyktan Txuratu'itan's name came up there as well. I accepted it and sent a test message, and this seems to have worked. One very intereating thing though-- the username was shortened to just Tsyalatun (or something similar). Maybe, this is what their name is really registered as in the PM system, or there is a name length limit.

When I originally registered, my name was just Tsyalatun, and then after I learned more Na'vi and had some discussions about names, it became longer.

So, from the sounds of what you're reporting, it seems that SMF can't cope at all with users changing their names... that sounds like a rather painful bug to me.

Nope, the problem is definitely what I described in the second post of this topic.

Interestingly, when Tsyalatun te Eyktan Txuratu'itan changed his email address from hidden to viewable and saved his profile, PM's started to send normally when I clicked on his profile to "send a message".  Something clearly changed in the system...

Toruk Makto

Oh, wow. I updated MySQL server to the latest version last week. Perhaps that had something to do with it.

Maybe?  Something clearly changed.  When I went to send a PM from Tsyalatun's profile (clicking link at bottom), it came up with his full name in quotes.  Not a shortened name as suggested.  So either going in and making his email visible and saving (or maybe any change), may have somehow cleared his record in the account database, or your MYSQL update did.  But it was not working on 20 March.  Then after he made the change, I was able to PM on the 21st.  Just my observations...

It hates to send messages to people with ' in their name.

Has it been totally fixed yet? That would be awesome.

It hasn't been fixed and I can't get any developer attention on it because everything is all 2.x now.

I just want to ask carefully about the actual situation with this partially br0ken PM system? :-\

It is exactly as I described in the second post on this thread.  There has been nothing from the SMF developers on it.

I understood. It's sad to hear that the developers "ignore" this SMF 1.1.X.
I know that with the wild cards, but it is sometimes... :(

That is an awesome tutorial. I really need to suck it up and dig into the code to see what they broke.

Irayo! If the codes are too RDA-like, just use that tutorial if you wish. :)

Absoulely amazing. I think for now we could even sticky a thread somewhere with this tutorial put as OP. "How to PM someone with apostrophe in name" or something?
